SONNET LXI - STUMBLING BLOCK

There's one great secret to the truth of God
that all of us obscure and complicate
We search for Him with minds so deeply flawed
while children freely pass through heaven's gate
The devil has one simple little task
to keep your thoughts obsessed with only You
but those who seek the truth need only ask
and finally the light comes shining through
Shift your concern to other people's hearts
make kindness unto all your only goal
then suddenly your pain and fear departs
as God himself flows through your loving soul
   The path to Him is blocked by your own mind
   Until you leave all self-interest behind
