SONNET LIX - THE SIEGE

My heart was crushed so many times before
and trampled down whenever love would sprout
At last I couldn't take it anymore
I built a wall to keep the danger out
And through the years so many women tried
to plant a flag within that stony dirt
They struggled hard to find a way inside
but I fought hard, afraid of being hurt
Then you saw light in me, so faint and small
and out there in the cold you bravely stayed
Where others fled, defeated by that wall
you loved me like a dream that wouldn't fade
The rubble of my fear lays at your feet
Upon the throne within come take your seat
