SONNET LVI - SLAIN

There you appeared from heaven up above
So clear and true, I thought that I might die
But though I see such pure shining love
I lack the wings to follow where you fly
My heavy flaws chain me to earth below
With heaven just a dream I cannot reach
Eternity would pass so very slow
Like waves forever warring with a beach
So slay me not with your celestial glance
I beg you, let my heart beat one more day
Give my entangled soul a fighting chance
To prove my worth before you fly away
Alas, one glance at you was suicide
And now I need those wings I threw aside
